My interpretation of her final moments.
In the HCA version of the story, the little mermaid becomes human not just for true love, but because she wants to attain a human soul and live forever in heaven. You see, mermaids live very long lives but when they die they turn to foam and have no afterlife. Sadly, by the end of the tale The Little Mermaid is doomed to die and turn to foam because her love, the prince, has married another (the woman he mistakenly believed rescued him).
Her sisters give her one last chance to save herself from certain death, they trade their hair to the sea witch in exchange for a magic dagger. They tell her that if she kills the prince she will turn back into a mermaid and live. But the little mermaid cannot bring herself to kill the man she loves, and instead plunges herself into the sea where she turns to foam.

I depicted her in this way to show her loss of humanity, the broken pearl necklace representing her shattered human past, the dagger her sacrifice, the tail her true nature, and the waves of foam are her inevitable death.
