? WHAT IS #Junicorn2017 ?
For the month of June 2017 I created one of a kind unicorn drawings all month long! Its called #junicorn , a monthly themed challenge to celebrate and engage with the online fantasy art community. Specifically, I explored and expanded the lore of unicorns within my own IP, a magical world called "Terratoff"
"As we all know by now, Unicorns are immune to the plague of Terratoff known as "The Rott", so long as their horns remain intact. An infected creature is usually shunned by their kin... but this is a different story.
This baby unicorn was abandoned by all but his twin brother after they broke his horn by playing too rough. Wracked with guilt, the younger brother refused to leave his side, even when his parents begged him to come away with them...
He wept for his cursed brother, who he had accidentally doomed to a blighted life. So young and so innocent, yet already these two knew of death, true sorrow, and regret.
The moths heard the younger brother's mourning and took pity on them. They surrounded the brothers as they lay cuddled together in the green. The younger brother felt an odd sense of comfort, even as his older brother began to
transform beside him.... to be continued...."
! THE PROCESS !
My process includes several steps. First, the sketch is drawn softly with colored graphite to draft the idea. Then I "sculpt" cleaner lines with the under-color that I want to show through the final drawing. Then charcoal colored graphite is drawn on top to tighten and clean the drawing as well as add detail. The sketch remains intact and visible beneath the charcoal color of the final drawing.
This process captures not just the final illustration, but also preserves the method and experience of creating it.
