Love Face Redo Submission by HeatherHitchman Love Face Redo Submission by HeatherHitchman
My entree into the "Draw this Again Competition".

I chose this piece to redo because I have always HATED how it turned out. I had this vision in my mind of a literal interpretation of the song and I just was not at the skill level required to portrait that. I even went as far as to purposely hide the hands behind branches... :hides in shame:

Since then, I have worked hard to do more studies and learn from my peers. I have challenged myself to draw things I knew I wasn't very good at, because i knew it would make me a better artist (even if it wasn't fun at the time). And for the first time I can sit down and draw something and spend 95% of the time actually DRAWING and not TRYING TO FIX MISTAKES. I am beginning to simply draw what I want to draw, and not hide my weaknesses behind props or clothes. I am starting to be able to create without compromising my vision because of lack of skill.

To me, this is what being an artist is all about, the relentless pursuit of perfection, whatever that means on an individual level. And embracing that even though perfection will never be truly realized, that you gave it your all to get what is in your head onto paper. And day by day, to get better and better at making the paper reflect more clearly that image in my head.

I could have easily rested on what I knew, and remained at that comfort level in 2009. But I made the uncomfortable choice to practice the boring stuff and it has freed me in a way I simply cannot describe. I am truly thankful to all those other artists (and stock photographers) that have inspired me, pushed me, and believed that I was capable of more than I was allowing myself to be at that time.

This piece is dedicated to my loving boyfriend :icontadl: who has inspired me more and more to be a better artist since the day I met him.

And these amazing stock artists :iconsenshistock: :iconimperialstarletstock: :iconmariaamanda: and :iconkxhara: who have freely given of their time and talent to help inspire artists like me every day.

Dammit now i'm crying! LOL I just can't believe how far this journey has taken me as an artist and a person. I know I still have a long road ahead of me, but I can see where it's leading and that gives me pure bliss.

The original is cute but I can see some major improvement in your line-work in the redo. The lines are sharper and looks consistent. On the original the branches look like they have been made with different tools than the girl. It has a fragile quality to it while the redo has the strong movements and details going for it.

2 hand have mistake.

Right arm in the wrong position (skewed to the right) make shoulders broaden.
Left arm..... in wrong position too (lowered) , like it not her arm.

Except the two, all is OK.

Wow, both pieces are beautiful but the second one just blows me away! I have been looking through these draw it agains out of boredom and yours is the first one that I needed to comment on. I just wanted to say thanks for the inspirational words. The part that really got to me was about how you could have rested on your skills in 09. I feel like I'm resting on mine, I get frustrated when trying to improve and give up. You have made the end result in leaving your comfort zone clear: perfect transition of ideas to paper. I need words like this to keep me going towards my goal of personal artistic perfection so thank you again so much!

thank you so much for your kind words :hug:
it means a lot to me that my words meant so much to you, and i encourage you to keep pushing and great things will happen! (even if it takes 3 years like it did with me, lol) there were times i literally broke down and cried, threw crumpled sketches in the bin, or scribbled all over the page in frustration. these are battles every artist faces at some point. the important thing is to pick up the pencil again and keep at it.
just keep pushing and you will accomplish more and more each day :-)
thank you again for your comment, it really made my week!

Ahahahah
It's funny how everyone (me too) just chose the piece we just HATE SO MUCH instead of taking the one we used to love.
Anyway...
Before -> Awesome
After -> Absolutely stunning!

Amazing! I like the before piece, but the after... it's much more stunning in the way you drew it, and in composition! You seem to have become much more sophisticated (is that the right word?) in your art! Very well done!
